The vital spark is a fictional clyde puffer, created by scottish writer neil munro.as its captain, the redoubtable para handy, often says: "the smertest boat in the coastin' tred".. Unlike these two contemporary shows, "tales of para handy" takes place in the early 1930s (possibly 1934-5, just after the final stories were published) and makes a decent job of portraying the scottish west coast at the time.. The first tv series "para handy master mariner", starring duncan macrae, was broadcast in 1959 (with lots of location footage, apparently) but sadly - like a lot of bbc shows of that era - no film of these original six episodes exist today..
